"A Brazilian policeman has confessed to killing the Greek ambassador after being discovered in bed with his wife in Rio de Janeiro.
Police in Brazil said today have requested the arrests of four people as they investigate the murder of Kyriakos Amiridis, 59, whose body was found in a burnt-out car in Rio.
The charred remains of Mr Amiridis were found on Thursday afternoon in a Ford Ka car left underneath an overpass in the city. He had hired the car to spend Christmas and New Year with his wife's relatives.
His Brazilian wife Francoise Amiridis told police she was out shopping on Monday night when her husband phoned at 8pm saying he was going out, and never returned home.
But today police investigating the case claimed they believe his death was a 'crime of passion' after the ambassador had discovered his wife was having an affair with a military policeman, Sergio Gomes Moreira Filho.
Investigators reportedly found bloodstains in the apartment, which belongs to his wife, where the couple had been staying in the Nova Iguacu district of the city.
Police believe Mr Amiridis was murdered in the apartment some time between Tuesday and Wednesday, before his body was dumped in the hire car and set on fire yesterday morning.
Today they requested the arrest of four people accused of involvement in the murder, including his wife and Filho.
Filho reportedly confessed to killing the diplomat in the apartment where the couple were spending Christmas, after he had reportedly caught him in bed with Francoise.
He then used the ambassador's own hire car to remove his body before setting it alight under an highway underpass.
Mr Amiridis and his Brazilian wife had been together for 15 years and have a 10-year-old daughter.
Police have not named the other two suspects in the murder, or what part they are believed to have played.
Mr Amridis, who took over as Greece's ambassador to Brazil in January this year, was Greek consul in Rio de Janeiro for three years from 2001, where he met his wife.
Before returning to Brazil, he was also the Greek ambassador in Libya for four years from 2012. "
